see ya, love ya, Care - bring hope and help to breast cancer patients and their families

The mission of sylyC is to make a meaningful and immediate difference in the lives of families affected and distressed by breast cancer, using creative and innovative non-medical ways to alleviate everyday burdens.

sylyC is publishing our first book titled - Breathe.

Why Orange?
Orange symbolizes determination, success, endurance, encouragement and strength.

sylyC is a non-profit corporation. Our 501(c)3 tax-exempt status is pending with the federal government and approval is expected by summer 2008. It is our goal to help those affected by breast cancer, today. Many efforts are underway to support breast cancer research, but our organization is focused on real people - right now.

In addition to being life threatening, breast cancer and it’s treatment can also threaten a woman’s identity, as well as her femininity. Having a support system is critical to healing, and surviving.

We all know women, men and children affected by breast cancer who need assistance with things that health insurance was never designed to cover: rent or daycare, a cell phone to stay in touch during an emotionally turbulent time, or a visit from a distant relative or best friend.
sylyC tries to help wherever we can.

Ways We Help

A single mother with breast cancer cannot afford to lose her job and insurance but may need help paying daycare expenses so she can work.
sylyC can help by covering those expenses for a few months during hard times.

Mothers too often shy away from the camera and are almost always under-represented on the walls of the homes and in the family photo albums. They need photographs; a positive and joyful focus to take with them while undergoing treatment and surgery. A reminder of the reasons to keep fighting.
sylyC can cover family portraits at a time when it seems like a frivolous expense - yet serves a very real and lasting need.

For a woman with breast cancer who moved to New Jersey from California and has no one to turn to in the local area
sylyC can fly in a family member for an uplifting visit.

July 3rd/4th BurstAthon Event

Come "burst" for charity at the Blairstown 4th of July Festivities in Footbridge Park! Ascenza Wellness Center and sylyC will be there starting 3:00pm on July 3rd - 3:00pm July 4th 2008. Teams of exercisers will keep half a dozen or more X-sizer machines operating continuously for 24 hours. Similar to a walk-a-thon, participants will be sponsored by donors to raise funds for sylyC! We are looking for volunteers!

Donations

Our fundraising is accomplished in a number of ways. First and foremost, we are a public charitable organization that depends on generous donations from caring people across the nation. With about 178,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed each year in the United States alone, most everyone is affected in some way. Unfortunately, 40,000 of those cases will be terminal. We want to be here to help those we can – to lessen their burdens, share their stories and make things easier for them and those that follow.

sylyC also produces books to generate revenue.  Our first book is scheduled for release in time for October 2008 - Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A second publication about Nutrition and Breast Cancer is also in development.

sylyC is also actively seeking sponsors who can provide products and services that we can offer to our constituents. Our wish list includes:

  • cell phones & service
  • calling cards
  • travel services such as airline tickets, car rentals and hotel
  • wig and prosthesis donation.

The sylyC – the see ya, love ya, Care story

Growing up my father didn’t say ‘I love you’ or any variation of the sentiment.  After I became a bit older, I began saying ‘love ya’ to him – you could see he wanted to respond but couldn’t.  One day I noticed he was mumbling something as I walked out the door.  The mumbling grew louder until it was audible.  “see ya, love ya, bye”.  That it was said at lightning speed made no difference.  In fact, it became a family competition – who could say those words fastest – who could say them first.  It became how we ended phone conversations, letters, how we said goodbye to one another.  Now emails are ended “sylyb”.  Saying it has become so second nature that I have heard him say it to the guys at the local lumber yard.  The fact that it has become so commonplace does not diminish its meaning.  To me, it means that he is more open.

After signing several emails with sylyb, the meaning was questioned by friends.  I relayed the story and we decided it was a great way to begin our foundation.  see ya, love ya, Care.  It was born out of opening yourself up to something new: to care and not being afraid to show it.  sylyC.

Founders

sylyC is the brain child of a few average, middle class women who decided to try to make a difference in this world. The idea to create a "Boob Book" to raise money for breast cancer grew into a greater vision very quickly.  sylyC.
